Holiday Concerts Did Not Disappoint!
Little Silver’s Music Program continues to impress audiences! The 2016-17 school year brought a new face to the music department - Mrs. Emma Baptist joined the Point Road faculty. Her energy and enthusiasm has been a great complement to our accomplished middle school music teachers: Mrs. Stephanie Bennett and Ms. Jennifer Brush. While the Borough Tree Lighting ceremony gave a “sneak peek” of what was to come, the Winter Holiday Concerts for both Point Road and Markham Place were nothing less than spectacular! The Point Road Chorus sang a variety of holiday favorites, and the various music ensembles from Markham Place (Orchestra, Band, Jazz Band, and Chorus) delighted their audience with a vast repertoire of classic and current selections. The holiday music season then culminated with the Intra-District Choral Festival. Participating districts included: Little Silver, Red Bank Regional, Brick, Millstone, Howell North, Freehold Township and Freehold Borough.

Hour of Code
Don’t be surprised if your children come home explaining computer coding to you. Computer programming is being introduced to students on the elementary level across the world (see the Hour of Code). Two decades ago, computer programming was offered to high school students in specialized classes. Now, all grade levels, beginning in Kindergarten, are coding! Younger students today learn a simplified version of how to tell a computer what to do. On Thursday, December 8th, Little Silver students participated in the Hour of Code. The Hour of Code is an attempt to teach the basics of computer programming in 60 minutes in a fun, simple way. It is part of a campaign that code.org launched with the goal of introducing coding into the US curriculum by raising awareness. The idea was to show that coding not just for the super, tech-savvy person but that coding actually plays a role in everything we do and everyone should have access to it.
This year, both schools participated in the Hour of Code. At Point Road, classes completed an “unplugged” activity before engaging in an online coding activity. At Markham, all students participated in an online coding activity. A special Thanks goes out to Mrs. Wendy Whittle and Mrs. Jill Lynch for organizing this opportunity for our students.

Save the Date!
On Thursday, January 12th the Little Silver School District plans to facilitate a Family Math Night for students and their parents. This event, for K-8 parents and students, has been designed to engage participants in a variety of fun and challenging math activities. The game stations and activity centers selected for family math all focus on reinforcing standards-based skills such as Operations and Algebraic Thinking, Numbers and Operations within Base Ten, Measurement and Data, and Geometry. Parents and students participating in Family Math Night can rotate freely through activity stations which will be differentiated by grade level. They can observe and learn as they walk through the "What do you notice?" gallery, program robots in STEM, and even try to solve their way out of the "Math Escape" room. Space is limited so don't miss out on your chance to be a part of this exciting evening of mathematical fun! Registration opened on December 22nd!
DID YOU KNOW?
In the last Parent Satisfaction survey, there were inquires and/or suggestions regarding after-school activities for students, including but not limited to: supervised after-school activities by school administrators; more after-school opportunities for elementary students; more after-school activities for fifth grade students. How are after-school activities determined? The majority of after-school activities are school-sponsored and are financially funded by the Little Silver Board of Education. Teachers are contracted to coach, facilitate a club or supervise games. The majority of school-sponsored activities are geared toward middle school students, as is typical across the state. Fifth grade students, while housed at Markham Place, are considered “elementary” students by law and, therefore, don’t qualify to participate in any inter-scholastic sporting event. While our music program, homework club, and sportsmanship clubs at Point Road are all school-sponsored, there have been activities in the past that have been graciously supported by the PTO. In those cases, it is parent volunteers who donate their time and energy to supervise the activities.
