MARKHAM PLACE
Little Silver is beginning the fourth year of our current Five-Year Strategic Plan (2013-14 through 2017-18). One of the objectives under our Student Achievement Goal Area is: To cultivate the social and emotional development of the students of Little Silver. One of our tasks was to investigate the possibility of creating multi-age peer groups, or social houses, to provide peer support and strengthen the overall school community. During the past school year, Mr. Platt worked with a scheduling community to plan for the needs of the school during this school year including providing time throughout the year for students to meet in social houses or Kith. Each Kith (derived from Kith and Kin or somebody’s friends or relatives) is comprised of students from grades five through eight. Together the students will work on service learning projects as well as partake in a unit of study from the It’s Okay to be Different program entitled Courage to Care. The Courage to Care curriculum is intended to give the students the skills to stand up to peer pressure and discrimination by exploring events in history that depict the struggle for human rights.
