POINT ROAD
October 31st marked the annual Halloween Parade at Point Road. As usual, the costumes did not disappoint!
MARKHAM PLACE
One of the many Markham traditions is the annual Halloween window painting. Under the direction of the Art Teacher, Nicole Lawlor, Markham Place students lined the streets of Little Silver, painting Halloween themes on the windows of local businesses. Markham 7th and 8th grade students also enjoyed their Halloween dance. A Spooktacular evening was had by all! | |
NJ School Aid: 200 Districts Who Got the Least Help
Little Silver residents often ask, “Why are my taxes so high?” The answer is that Little Silver receives very little State Aid. A review of State Aid figures revealed that of the 200 districts in New Jersey receiving the LEAST amount of support (with 1 being the lowest in the state), Little Silver ranked 3rd, with only two other districts in the entire state receiving less State Aid than us. Read more about it here.
PARCC Requirements
This 2016-17 school year will mark Year 3 of PARCC test administration. We continue to be extremely proud of our high levels of student achievement on this state mandated test! On August 3, 2016, the New Jersey State Board of Education approved updated state regulations in both English Language Arts (ELA) and mathematics. While there are certain provisions that are being phased in (see assessment requirements), our current 8th grade students (Class of 2021) and beyond must take and pass the PARCC ELA Grade 10 and PARCC Algebra 1 in order to graduate from high school. There is a provision in place if a passing score is not met on PARCC ELA Grade 10 and PARCC Algebra 1 which involves meeting the criteria of the NJDOE Portfolio Appeals Process, as outlined in the previous link. As a public school district, we are governed by Federal and State requirements regarding assessment. We have always been required to administer State assessment. Last year, 98% of our students took the PARCC, and this year we hope to achieve 100% participation. We will continue to provide our students with every opportunity to be successful passing their high school requirements by requiring that they take their designated grade level assessment.
Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying
At times, individuals have been overheard saying, “My child is being bullied.” Little Silver’s Board of Education Policy 5512, Harassment, Intimidation and Bullying, defines the parameters of an incident that would be considered “bullying” as opposed to student “conflict”. All students need to learn how to maneuver through conflict with others as they grow and mature while seeking the assistance of teachers, counselors and parents. Please talk with your child when conflict occurs. Not all “conflict” constitutes “bullying.” There are distinct differences between “Conflict” and “Bullying” based on the parameters of the Anti-Bullying Right Act. For the specific parameters of the School Board Policy, please click on the policy link above. In short…
Conflict * Does not disrupt the operation of the school day * Has the effect of upsetting or bothering another student * A reasonable person should know that it could possibly place a student in fear of physical or emotional harm * A reasonable person should know that actions could possibly cause physical or emotional harm to a student * Environment and education are not interfered with * There could be momentary physical or emotional harm to a student | Bullying * Substantially disrupts or interferes with the orderly operation of the school day * Has the effect of insulting or demeaning students * A reasonable person should know that actions will place a student in fear of physical or emotional harm * A reasonable person should know that actions will cause physical or emotional harm to a student * Creates a hostile environment by interfering with a student’s education * Causes severe or ongoing physical or emotional harm to a student |
